From concept to prototype, every piece starts life in the Alfie Douglas design studio in the heart of London. Although their products are simple, there’s more to making a simple leather bag than meets the eye. It takes time, a skilled hand and a sophisticated knowledge of materials to get it right and make a bag that lasts a lifetime.
Every piece is hand built at traditional workbenches in small batches by craftsman using skills that have been passed down through generations of the same family. Alfie Douglas makers are a dedicated group of individuals who take great pride in everything that they make. Each piece is assembled and finished by hand, even the rivets, which are specially made, are hand-hammered.
Alfie Douglas leathers are sourced from the best tanneries in the world. Every single piece of our leather is unique, it has its own grain, structure and character. They match each piece to the function it has been designed for. Leather changes slowly over time. Exposure to sunlight darkens the colour. Everyday use, scratches and natural oils allow it to develop its own character. How you live you life, will be reflected in your bag and will become part of your life story.Alfie Douglas leathers are prepared using natural vegetable extracts from a variety of wood, bark, fruit, roots and leaves. Environmentally friendly with no harsh chemicals, it’s a slow process taking up to six months from start to finish. The end result is a beautiful rich leather made to last a lifetime.
Leather is a natural product and may be slightly stiff to start with. Over time it softens and will break-in like a favourite pair of shoes. The more you use it, the softer it will become, the more it will change shape, the more it becomes part of you.
