An intensive winter workshop that culminates in a public reading hosted and promoted by O, Miami.
This workshop, taught by Caroline Cabrera, focuses on the intersection of prose and poetry: the prose poem or flash fiction. These pieces are tightly woven and so well attended to that both poets and fiction writers would like to claim them for their own.
In this course we will read and write prose poetry, flash fiction and hybrid pieces. Some readings will include work from Ander Monson, Anne Boyer, Lily Hoang, Andrea Lawlor, and many others. Weekly participants will read and discuss prose poems from others, as well as producing and sharing their own work, often with the help of prompts inspired by the texts. The workshop culminates in a final reading for the public.
Caroline Cabrera is the author of the poetry collection Saint X, winner of the Hudson prize and forthcoming from Black Lawrence Press in January 2018. Her previous collections include The Bicycle Year, Flood Bloom, and the chapbook Dear Sensitive Beard. Her recent work can be found at The Fairy Tale Review, Foundry, Horse Less Press, Muse / A Journal, and Night Jar Review. She is founder and editor of Bloom Books, the chapbook imprint of Jellyfish Magazine. She has a Bachelor’s degree in English from Stetson University and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Creative Writing from the University of Massachusetts. She has taught composition and creative writing at the University of Massachusetts, Florida Atlantic University and Metropolitan State University of Denver.
